Looking for a hypnotherapist in Hook?
Hypnosis is a technique that has been used in medicine for over 200 years. Franz Mesmer stumbled across a process he called Mesmerism in the 1780s. This was the precursor to the modern hypnosis in Hook you are interested in.
What Is Hypnosis
The definition of hypnosis is; the induction of a state of consciousness in which a person apparently loses the power of voluntary action and is highly responsive to suggestion or direction.
Use of hypnosis
It is used for the treatment of many medical problems and conditions including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, sleeping problems, addictions such as smoking and gaming, losing weight and post traumatic stress.
The traditional expectation of hypnosis is of course inaccurate. When you are hypnotised you are not under the control of anyone and still have free will. You cannot be forced to do anything you don’t want to.
What does hypnosis feel like?
When you are hypnotised you are in a trance state. It is very similar to daydreaming or being engrossed in a book or film. You are very relaxed with heightened imagination and very suggestible. Sleeping it is not, as you are alert the whole time.
In this state your mind is far more open to suggestions and retrieving memories. The subconscious mind that you normally cannot access is now available to you and the therapist.
This large part of your mind enables you to do things automatically. You don’t think about breathing or how to walk. When in a trance new instructions and thoughts can be suggested and accepted in your subconscious.
How can hypnotherapy help you?
It can help you day to day in coping with all that life throws at you. For example if you are prone to anxiety the hypnotic instruction to rub two fingers together can help calm you. These are called post hypnotic suggestions and can be very effective.
You can also learn how to hypnotise yourself enabling you to reinforce the hypnosis therapy you receive. Self hypnosis can be done quickly once you have mastered the technique so is usable everyday.
Your brain is affected by both types of hypnosis. Activity in the brain changes and can be seen on electroencephalographs (EEG). This records electrical activity in your brain in the same way an ECG does of your heart.
How am I hypnotised?
This is fairly standard and there are 3 main techniques.
The first is as you know from films and involves fixing your eyes on say a watch swinging from side to side.
The second is rapid induction as used by stage hypnotists who use firm instructions and directions.
Thirdly is progressive relaxation and imagery combined with a slow soothing voice, often employed by medical professionals.
All three hypnotic inductions work well. Most importantly nobody can be hypnotised against there will. So no need to be nervous.
Hypnosis and hypnotherapy in Hook is a safe and effective approach for many problems as long as it is performed by trained professionals. You will find them here
