Phagophobia is a fear of choking that is amenable to treatment with hypnotherapy. This is a case study published in 2016 of the presentation, treatment and follow up of a 13 year old female patient.
The patient first presented 3 weeks after a choking episode that resulted in her developing a fear of choking and associated fear of swallowing. She was losing weight and at initial presentation had lost 12 pounds.
Over the course of the following 2 months she continued losing weight and her greatest weight loss was 20 pounds, which meant she was underweight for her age and height.
Treatment was initially 12 sessions of hypnosis over a 5 month period. At first the sessions were weekly, then moved to fortnightly.
At a follow-up appointment 1 month after the last hypnotherapy session the patient was eating normally with no fear and gaining weight. A couple of months after that she had a relapse in response to friendship stress but only required 4 more sessions to overcome her phagophobia, as demonstrated by eating pizza with the hypnotherapist.
3 years on and the patient is symptom free and has no fear of swallowing. This case study is a clear demonstration of the benefit of hypnosis and how it can be used to overcome an acute problem.
